About the Author

Jan grew up in Manchester and Derbyshire, spending her formative years on the back of a pony, exploring the hills and moorland around her home. She lived and worked in London and Buckinghamshire for 19 years until moving to Wales in 2005, where she learnt to speak fluent Welsh. Jan has won several writing competitions, including the Allen Raine Short Story competition, the WI Lady Denman Cup, and the Oriel Davies Gallery competition for nature-writing. She has been published in New Welsh Review.

A word from Jan

I wrote my first novel when I was seven, all about the adventures of a little green one-legged spaceman, who crash-landed his tiny ship in my north Manchester suburb. We had plenty of adventures, Fred and me, filling fourteen Lancashire Education Committee exercise books and earning me two gold stars in the process. But when I was eight, a rotund Welsh Mountain Pony by the name of Pixie trotted into my life, and writing was immediately relegated in favour of all things equine.

It took more years than I care to admit for me to resume my writing career. In 2005 we moved to gloriously inspiring mid Wales. In 2009 I stumbled across an Open University creative writing module and the rest, as they say, is history. After completing my OU degree, I fulfilled a lifetime ambition and enrolled on an MA course at Swansea University. The whole experience was magical. It was like being taken by the hand and led back to a place where my imagination could run riot.
I began by writing short stories, which I love, but I always feel disappointed when I have to say goodbye to my characters so soon, and so the next challenge was to attempt a novel. It’s been a fantastic experience, from its shaky start in a brand new exercise book, but now, finally, I have my second novel. I still have a horse – this one’s been with me for over twenty years – but these days I seem to be able to allow the two obsessions – books and horses – to run side by side.

Promo – Her One True Love by Rachel Brimble

Hellllooooo! Me again with another promo! This sounds awesome and I will definitely read when I’m reading again!!! Also, that dress on the cover, stunning!

About the Book

She Can’t Forget Him…
Jane Charlotte Danes has loved the squire of her idyllic country town for as long as she can remember. He is good, kind, and alluring beyond words… and he chose to marry another. Tired of dwelling on her futile longings, Jane plans a move to Bath, where she dreams of a new beginning. But the man who has so imprisoned her heart is only a few steps behind…

He Can’t Let Her Go…
Until now, Matthew Cleaves has endeavored to meet the responsibilities of his position with dignity and good spirits–including his dutiful marriage. But when his wife leaves him for another man, Matthew is at last free to pursue his one true love. Only one vital question remains: will the captivating, stubborn, beautiful Jane allow him the challenge, and the pleasure, of winning her back?..

A little snippet of the book

Matthew turned and faced Jane. “When are you leaving for the city?”

She took another step back, her gaze darting over his face. “The day after tomorrow. Why?”

“Because I will escort you. We can travel together in my carriage.”

“No, I do not need your––”

“I will be going anyway. I planned to visit some contacts in the city in the hope of securing guaranteed trade for Biddestone in the coming year. It seems unnecessary for us to make the trip separately when I have a carriage plenty big enough for us both.”

“There is absolutely no need. Jeannie will be coming with me.”

“My offer still stands.”

She glared. “It’s my intention to start on the path of independence, of finding out what the world has to offer me on my own merit. I will hardly be carving out my own path when at the first step from my home, I lean on you.”
“You are being stubborn.”
She pulled back her shoulders. “And you are not?”

The longer he looked at her, the more Matthew saw the quiet beauty he’d desperately tried to ignore. He took a steadying breath. “Please, Jane. Let me escort you to Bath.”

The seconds passed, but Matthew held his tongue. It was imperative she spoke next, that she understood he didn’t mean to bully her but wanted to ensure her safety to a city ravaged by danger, as much as opportunity.

She sighed. “Fine. On one condition.”
He held her gaze. “Which is?”
Her eyes softened, slowly lighting with mischief. “You smile. Now. You smile at me like you did before she left.”
Heat rose to his face. “You want me to smile?”
“Yes. Smile for me, Matthew.”
Empathy and passion swirled in her eyes, but they also bore a deep, painful awareness that scratched hard over his heart. The longer he stared, the more he wanted to make her happy.
He smiled, his gaze on hers…and was surprised to find the trade no effort at all

About the Book

That has to be a good thing doesn’t it? Or it could be a disaster…both carry scars, and old wounds have a habit of causing new hurt.Physical attraction draws them together but hearts and minds can be thorny. One thing is certain, together or apart their lives will move on. Alexander and Hettie’s clashes of spirit will only be part of the story.

Second chances. New beginnings. The opportunity to make things right. Or to make the same mistakes all over again. Unless fate takes the future out of your hands…

Praise for Sam Russell

‘Russell delves into her characters’ minds exposing their innermost thoughts, fears, and desires’

‘The author’s ability to flesh out a character into a believable human being is what sets a great book above the rest’

‘Sam Russell’s beautiful writing draws you right into Draymere alongside Hettie, Alexander the horses and dogs, and keeps you there’

EXCERPT
Her sharp green eyes slipped over him as she scanned the arrivals hall. He noticed the dusting of sun-freckles across her cheeks and his heart clenched as he waited. He needed to read her face, to believe she was back for good. Her gaze swept around again, and this time their eyes connected. For a suspended moment it felt as if his heart stopped beating, and the pit of his stomach fell.

Then she grinned at him.

The suitcase swung into her legs at her sudden change of direction. He waved, and she abandoned the case and ran at him. He lifted her off the ground and pressed his eyes shut, not trusting himself to speak. He felt her breath warm on his neck.

My Review

It’s been a while since I properly read a children’s book, you know without using funny voices to my nieces and nephews! I loved this book, despite an undercurrent of something terrible having happened, the bond between Nicholas James, his Aunt and the dog (Mikey) is just lovely. The concept is a different one and not something that particularly reminded me of anything I’ve read before (a very good thing!)

I’d say it’s maybe for the older children in your life, say 7 or 8 plus, but it’s a marvellous story with intrigue and action that children and adults alike will love!

Review: Basic Element by Wendy Cartmell

About the Book:

He’s not a killer. He’s ordinary. It’s just that he has an addiction.

An excerpt:

Boy

You’d be surprised how still I can sit. I’m doing it now. My bottom is on the floor, my knees are pulled up and my arms wrapped around them. I’m watching a spider. A big, black, fat one. He’s just behind that rock. He came out once, but I frightened him by moving, so he ran away and I had to start all over again. I won’t make that mistake again. I can wait for ages and ages.

Here he comes. I can see one black leg poking out. Here comes another, and another. A spider has eight legs. I learned that at school. I like school, it’s interesting. I’m not like some of the other children. They mess about, don’t concentrate, don’t try their hardest. I always try my hardest. Daddy makes sure of that. Daddy helped me to learn to sit still. He said I was a terrible wriggler, so he tied me to a chair until I stopped. He doesn’t have to tie me down anymore. I can sit still for ages, until he tells me I can get down. It makes me feel funny inside. I quite like that feeling. So I do as I’m told.

I can see the spider’s body now. He’s inching his way out from his hiding place, his legs reaching out ahead of him, making sure there’s nothing in his way. And there isn’t. Not really. Only my little hand and if I keep it still enough he’ll crawl right onto it.

The spider is climbing onto my hand now. One leg, two. He’s an old slow coach but I can wait. Nearly there…

My fingers curl over his body, trapping him inside my hand. Got him!

I hold the spider’s body between my finger and thumb, leaving his legs dangling in the air. Now I can count them. The first leg comes off easily, making him wriggle even more. He isn’t as good as being still as I am. As I pull off each leg I sing quietly to myself…

Incy wincy spider…

My Review:
Wendy is back with another outstanding piece of crime fiction, bringing Crane, Anderson and the Major Crimes Unit back to investigate another intriguing crime. Is there a strangler? Is it the mild mannered Professor? Who is Boy? You need to read this book to find out, yet again a gripping story from Wendy!

2016

This year, well how else can I describe it than a cesspool of shit, when every knock we took as a people, as a planet, was quickly followed by another (often worse) knock.

It has been a year where some of our best and brightest celebrities have been taken from us. I’ll never forgive 2016 for taking Alan Rickman from us. Or Victoria Wood. In fact theres been so many, that I can’t actually remember who else I’m angry about!

It’s also been, in my memory, the worst year for human kind, because we seem to have forgotten the word Kind in that. We are a people, all made equal, even if we look a bit different. And yet our beliefs, the colour of our skin and shape of our bodies seems to have become even more (because let’s face it, none of this is new) of an issue for some people. Or lots of people. We’ve had terrorism like I’ve never known, it’s as if 9/11 was a trial to see how far you can push people and now they’re firing off across the globe.

Never mind Je Suis Charlie (I don’t mean that disrespectfully) How about Je Suis Gens

And don’t say ‘All Lives Matter’ because it’s seen as taking away from ‘Black Lives Matter’ say ‘No Life Matters Less than Mine’ – if you’re white, you’ve never been oppressed for the colour of your skin, I don’t care if you think you have. Show solidarity for everyone else on the planet.

I’ve hated 2016, personally it’s been a year of struggling and disappointment. The job I adore has become a chore because of bureaucracy and the games people play to be on top. I’ve wandered from one attempt at a relationship to another. I’ve had to take on a second job to make ends meet. Every time I dare to dream of some good, the world knocks me on my ass. Whether that’s personally or universally.

2016 was the year in which a billionaire successfully bought himself a presidential election and yet again, a woman was put back ‘in her place’ by a sex offending Cheeto with bleached pubic hair for a wig. The glass in the glass ceiling is safety glass and was put there by a man.

On Tuesday, I turn 33. And there’s only 4 weeks left of this terrible year. I beg for a better December. Not just for me, but the the whole world.

My Review

Amanda is making a new life for herself in a quaint Yorkshire village, her shop A New Lease of Life is named very aptly, is her new focus in life. Shes content and excited about the future until grumpy Ben makes an appearance. What with his staunch views of newcomers to the village! As a Yorkshire lass myself (transplanted to a small Yorkshire village from Dublin), I know only too well how hard it can be to fit into the ‘everyone knows everyone’ when nobody knows you! Rachel’s perfectly depicted the usual suspects of village life, from the busy bodies with hearts of gold to the strapping vet (we didn’t have one of those, mores the pity) and given Westfield and Amanda a very warm welcome! I think this book has a little something for us all, and I especially enjoyed Westfield and its residents!
